It has been known for millennia that salt is needed by animals as well as man. It is not only the taste that makes it attractive but the fact that living bodies need sodium and Chloride as essential components for health. Sodium is a mineral key component in blood serum and is highly regulated. It is essential for proper muscle and nerve functions. Chloride is the primary anion in blood and essential for maintaining the proper acid-base balance of the body as well as producing the key stomach acids.
Ruminant animals have an appetite for salt to the extent that the salt source is permanently imprinted in their brains. Horses have been shown to have a specific appetite for salt if their diet is insufficient in sodium. This makes salt beneficial as a delivery mechanism of less palatable essential minerals and nutrients.
There are at least 7 trace minerals that have been shown to be necessary for healthy livestock diets. They are iron, copper, zinc, manganese, cobalt, iodine, and selenium. These essential minerals are needed in very small amounts and thus are often called ‘trace minerals’. The deficiency of these trace minerals are a much larger problem than most livestock producers know. Typically, there is no prominent, outward sign of these deficiencies except a proportionately lower rate of growth and/or disease immunity. Ultimately, these deficiencies show up in a lower bottom line amount for livestock production. As soil quality declines and crop production increases, it is necessary to increase other trace minerals beyond the 7 mentioned.
Salt with essential minerals can be fed to animals in various ways. It can either be loose salt mixed with feeds or self-fed often with salt blocks. Salt blocks are especially useful in small or large pasture and ranges where it can be distributed easily.
In addition to Sodium and Chloride which make up almost 97% of Taurus salt, lab tests detected trace amounts of the following minerals in the Taurus salt blocks: Calcium (Ca),Potassium (K),Rubidium (Rb), Sulfur (S), Magnesium (Mg), Iron (Fe), Silicon (Si), Aluminum (Al), Carbon (C), Silver (Ag), Copper (Cu), Bromine (Br), Fluoride (F), Iodine (I), Zinc (Zn), Manganese (Mn), Cesium (Cs), Lithium (Li), Gallium (Ga), Erbium (Er), Phosphorus (P), Titanium (Ti), Antimony (Sb), Cerium (Ce), Zirconium (Zr), Barium (Ba), Boron (B), Gadolinium (Gd), Samarium (Sm), Strontium (Sr), Thallium (Tl), Germanium (Ge), Bismuth (Bi), Dysprosium (Dy), Niobium (Nb), Scandium (Sc), Terbium (Tb), Cobalt (Co), Cadmium (Cd), Selenium (Se), Praseodymium (Pr), Tantalum (Ta), Ruthenium (Ru), Vanadium (V), Chromium (Cr), Molybdenum (Mo), Thulium (Tm), Lutetium (Lu), Ytterbium (Yb), Gold (Au),
No quantities of the following elements were detected in lab tests: Indium, Holmium, Europium, Hafnium, Neodymium, Tellurium, Arsenic, Lanthanum, Osmium, Tin, Tungsten, Lead, Rhenium, Nickel, Iridium,Thorium, Beryllium, Palladium,Yttrium, Platinum, Rhodium, and Mercury.
More Taurus Salt Facts
Good salt has long been considered to be of great value to humans from all over the world for millennia. This is because of the basic need of all living things to have salt in their diet. The roman soldiers were paid with salt periodically in amounts called salarium. This later becomes the basis for the English word salary. The English word salad originally come from the same Latin roots for salt meaning salted. This vestiges left in our language emphasize the value that salt was to ancient mankind.
The Taurus Salt Plant is located in Salina, Utah which is in close proximity to the natural salt mine. Salina is the Spanish word for saline or salty. The town of Salina was likely named by early Spanish explorers that frequented the nearby Old Spanish Trail.
Bart Leavitt, president of Taurus Salt envisioned the extraordinary possibilities with this central Utah natural salt source, so he invested in the expansion of his company with the Salina plant in 2005. These natural salt blocks will fill an important need to livestock producers who understand the value of this quality salt. The center of attention of the Taurus Plant is the custom designed salt press which is capable of compressing a 5 gallon bucket of clean, natural salt into a compact block with 750 tons of pressure. Each block weighs 44.1 lbs.
